Vintage 1955 Shakespeare Deluxe Fly Wonderod 7'-9" 2 Piece EUC With Medalist Reel.  A great find today is the Shakespeare Wonderod 7'-9" 2 piece mfg July 1955 fitted with a very nice Medalist 1494 1/2 DA fly reel .  The rod is in near factory condition with cork grip, anodized aluminum reel seat, blank, wraps and guides near perfect.  The cork grip is firm and intact.  The rod blank is free from any cracks, splits or defects.  The red wraps and green accents
are sealed with none loose or frayed,  The black anodized ferrules are firmly set and disconnect with a solid pop.  The Wonderod decal is intact with no missing pieces, cracks or defects.  The reel seat is spring loaded so to remove or install the reel, the butt cap is pulled rearward thus allowing the interlocking pieces to expand and accept the fly reel reel foot.
According to the information I was able to gather, this rod model was built by Shakespeare from 1951 through 1959 with reel seat is stamped No. 1280B FFD.  I have tried to show this in the images but was not very successful.  The stamps indicate the rod was built in the year 1955 month of July and the Model 1280B is the 7'-9" series designed for bass type gamefish.  Factory specs declare the rod to weigh at 5.2oz but the model I am offering weighs 4.8oz on my postal scale.
Factory specs declare the line weight the rod in the older designations to be C, 6MH that translates to the AFTMA equivalent of a W7WF to a W9WF if I have gathered my information correctly.  This information regarding the line weights are easily found online and conversions made quite simply.
The reel is the classic USA made Medalist that was so popular and seen on many fly fishing outfits right after WWII and on into the early 1970's.  The reel is sound in excellent condition with a working drag.  There are a few scuffs and marks in the black anodized finish but nothing major that would detract from the appearance.  It is currently set up for RH retrieve and I am not certain if it can be converted to LH.  There are remnants of backing still present on the spool.  the insides of the reel are clean and corrosion free as the images indicate.
Here is an opportunity to get a fine piece of fly fishing Americana that has been well taken care of and will provide many many forays to the lake or river.  I have attempted to describe the outfit as accurately as possible.  Even though I am an avid fly fisherman, I am no expert on the early built rods and reels.  I do know that I enjoy fishing with them and have come to the crossroads in life where it is time to let some go and hopefully land in the hands of some in the younger generation that may not ever know what it is like to use something that was built by true American craftsmen who sat at a bench and produced what was at the time, a fine product.
I offer free insured shipping to the lower USA 48 only.  I do not ship internationally.
